WITSA Applauds Extension of WTO’s Moratorium on Customs Duties on Electronic Transmissions

 Fairfax, VA:  The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) welcomes the World Trade Organization’s decision to extend the moratorium on placing customs duties on electronic transmissions, from streaming services to financial transactions and corporate data flows, worth hundreds of billions of dollars a year. The moratorium, which has been in place since 1998, was extended until the next WTO ministerial conference, which would normally be held by the end of 2023, but in any case, will expire on March 31, 2024. A few countries had been critical of further extensions, citing lost customs revenues.

“The customs revenue implications of the Moratorium are likely to be small and outweighed by important gains from ensuring that electronic transmissions remain tariff-free”, stated WITSA Secretary General Dr. Jim Poisant. “On the basis of existing evidence, there is therefore, a strong case for renewing the Moratorium. Overall, the fiscal policy case for abandoning the Moratorium on customs duties on electronic commerce does not stand up to scrutiny”, continued Dr. Poisant.

The fiscal policy case is just one part of the equation. There are considerable benefits from digitalization for trade across all sectors of the economy and for countries at different levels of development. Electronic transmissions reduce trade costs and imposing tariffs is welfare-reducing. Moreover, empirical evidence suggests that the use of foreign business services is key for export competitiveness. The Moratorium is particularly beneficial to Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs), whose ability to access and leverage digital tools has allowed them to stay in business amidst physical restrictions and lockdown.

“WITSA is pleased that WTO members ultimately took into consideration the wider benefits of the Moratorium and did not focus solely on the potential customs revenue implications,” said WITSA Vice President for Global Public Policy Anders Halvorsen. “A lapse would come at the expense of wider gains in the economy, including in terms of consumer welfare and export competitiveness”, continued Halvorsen. The onus is now on the WTO members to come together to agree on a permanent solution to the moratorium before the next ministerial”.

WITSA Signs Global Industry Statement on WTO ITA Expansion (ITA-3)

An expanded ITA would grow the global GDP $800 billion over the next decade

 

Fairfax, VA:  The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) on May 16th signed a global industry statement calling on WTO Information Technology Agreement (ITA) member countries to launch a new round of negotiations to expand its product coverage (ITA-3).

The ITA, implemented in 1996 and expanded in 2016, has played a pivotal role in growing the global economy and bridging the digital divide. By eliminating tariffs on hundreds of high-tech goods and components, from semiconductors to smartphones, the ITA makes transformational technology products more affordable and accessible, while spurring productivity, innovation, and economic growth in both developing and developed economies. To date, 82 WTO members are signatories of the ITA, and 54 are signatories of ITA Expansion (ITA-E/ITA-2). WITSA had been a long supporter of the ITA and ITA-2, as established in its Statement of Policy on International Trade in ICT Goods and Services. In 2017, WITSA signed on to a multi-association trade letter, calling on non-signatories to join this pioneering agreement and asking members in those countries to encourage participation. That statement turned out to be a powerful advocacy tool and we appreciate members support in reaching out to their respective governments.

However, as technology continues to transform society and industry in ever new sectors, there is now a need to take another fresh look at the ITA and another expansion of covered products (ITA-3).

An ITA-3 would bring a number of emerging technologies driving the global digital economy under ITA coverage, further bridge the digital divide, give a bigger window to the world for students learning remotely, better facilitate remote working and reduced carbon emissions, provide new tools to address climate change, and promote better remote healthcare solutions and save lives. And it would give another strong boost to economic growth. By one estimate, an additional significant expansion of the ITA would add nearly $800 billion to the global GDP over 10-years.

The ITA-1 and its 2015 expansion, or ITA-2, have increased employment, put innovative and affordable tech products in the hands of consumers, empowered workers, driven the digital economy, played a catalytic role in developing global value chains, boosted economic growth around the world, and bridged communities across the globe in ways unimagined when the original agreement was launched 25 years ago. More immediately, technologies covered by the ITA have enabled the world to better weather global lockdowns by facilitating remote working and learning in ways that could not have been imagined when ITA-1 was being negotiated, and by increasing access to vital goods needed to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, including the rapid development of mRNA vaccines. Another round of ITA product expansion, coupled with expansion of geographic scope of the agreement would yield immediate and sweeping benefits, removing tariffs on a vast array of tech products not currently covered and spreading the benefits of digital innovation around the world to developing and developed economies alike.

While ITA-2 captured an impressive $1.3 trillion in tech trade, there have been major advances in ICT technology since 2015.  More than seven years have passed since the ITA-2 was achieved and not a single product has been added to the agreement even though the ICT sector is bursting with innovation and demand for digital technologies is growing exponentially. A letter is now being drafted, calling on ITA members to support launching another ambitious new round of negotiations to further expand this critically important agreement and carry forward the robust momentum produced by the original ITA and its 2015 expansion. An ITA-3 would give a strong boost the World Trade Organization, generate enormous benefits to workers across the world, support the global environment, bring more developing countries into the digital supply chain, and promote global prosperity.

Several associations and companies traveled to Geneva to present the global industry statement to the WTO and trade missions on May 16, 2022. As part of the visit, the delegation met with WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Deputy Directors-General Angela Paolini ELLARD, ITA Committee Secretariat Dr Xiaodong Wang, and numerous Ambassadors from countries with missions in Geneva, including Amb. Pagan of the US, Amb. Stephen de Boer of Canada, Amb. Yamazaki of Japan, Amb. Manuel Teehankee of the Philippines, Amb. Lee of South Korea, and Amb. Lo of Chinese Taipei. During the meetings, the group presented the global industry statement signed by more than 40 associations from around the world — from Bangladesh to Bahrain and representing millions of workers — urging ITA members to launch another ambitious new round of ITA expansion negotiations (or ITA-3) to significantly expand product coverage of the agreement.

Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Meets WITSA SG, to Officially Open WCIT 2022 Malaysia in Penang; MoU Signed to Drive Transformation, Grow Industry

 

Fairfax, VA:  WITSA Secretary General Dr. Jim Poisant on May 11 met with His Excellency Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob, Prime Minister of Malaysia at Willard InterContinental Washington, D.C. Hotel. During the one-on-one session, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri strongly expressed his support for WITSA’s flagship event, the World Congress on Innovation and Technology (WCIT), which will next be held in Penang, Malaysia, on September 13-15, 2022. The Hon. Prime Minister was confident WCIT would help to grow the tech industry both globally and in Malaysia and put a spotlight on how technology can benefit humankind through innovation and entrepreneurship. He was looking forward to officially opening WCIT 2022 Malaysia in Penang on September 13th, 2022.

The Prime Minister traveled to the United States on a four-day working visit, during which he also met with President Joe Biden, ASEAN leaders and major U.S. companies, including Microsoft, Google, Tesla, Boeing, IBM, Texas Instruments, GE Aviation, Conoco Phillips, Ford, National Instruments, Infineon, Micron, and Insulet.

“The WCIT is unique in its global perspective on tech issues and its ability to draw users, providers, media and academia from around the world”, said WITSA Secretary General Dr. Jim Poisant.  “Global business, government and academic leaders discuss emerging markets, legal and policy issues, political and economic trends, emerging technologies, tech user perspectives and business opportunities in the global marketplace,” continued Dr. Poisant. “I am delighted that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri will personally join us in Penang to open our ‘Olympics of IT’, which help connect and transform the world by exploring innovative approaches to      fulfill the promise of the digital age for everyone.”

Dr. Poisant on May 12, 2022 also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between WITSA, Malaysia’s Human Resource Development Corporation (HRDC) and The National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM). The signing ceremony was attended by      the Malaysian      Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Saravanan Murugan,      Senior Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Azmin Ali and Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah. HRDC was represented by its Chief Executive Datuk Shahul Dawood.

In the MoU, HRDC, PIKOM and WITSA committed to collaborate in organizing WCIT 2022 Malaysia and to drive transformation and grow the industry given that tech is the key driver of the global economy. The parties also agreed to advocate international public policies that advance the industry’s growth and development, to facilitate international trade and investment in tech products and services through their respective global network of contacts, and to promote industry cooperation and strengthen their national associations through the sharing of knowledge, experience, and critical information. The MoU also stipulated that the parties would work closely with internationally recognized organizations to promote and facilitate growth.

PIKOM Chairman and WITSA Deputy Chairman Dr. Sean Seah urged businesses, governments, users, media and academia from all around the world to participate in WCIT 2022 Malaysia on September 13-15 and join the conversations to “Connect and Transform the World”, the theme of this year’s Congress. “Billions of online connections are driving innovation and changing everything,”      said Dr. Seah. “This changing landscape is a world of opportunities. Make the digital economy relevant to you and you to it,” continued Dr. Seah. “Different economies perceive advances in technology in different ways. The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance Appoints New CEO

 Fairfax, VA:  The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) today appointed Dato Dan E. Khoo as its new Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Khoo will work alongside Secretary General Dr. Jim Poisant until his retirement on September 30, 2022.

“After many years at the helm of WITSA, Jim will be retiring at the end of September, following the World Congress on Innovation and Technology in Penang, Malaysia, our flagship event,” stated WITSA Chairman Yannis Sirros. “Jim is responsible for leading WITSA to the great organization that it is today, growing the organization and developing our hugely successful WCIT brand. Jim has been a cornerstone of WITSA for over 25 years, and it is hard to envisage a future without his steadfast leadership, marketing skills, and vision. WITSA and IT Ukraine Association Applauds Ukraine’s ‘Hidden IT Heroes’, Calls on Support from the Global ICT Industry

Fairfax, VA: The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) and IT Ukraine Association fully support UN Secretary António Guterres and his appeal to President Putin to end the war in Ukraine. “Such unilateral measures conflict directly with the United Nations Charter, which states that all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations”, said WITSA Secretary General Dr. Jim Poisant.

As an organization dedicated to the peace and prosperity and fulfilment of the digital promise to all by enhancing international trade and the rule of law for nearly 50 years, we stand with the innocent people of Ukraine in these difficult times and encourage the world community to do the same, said WITSA Chairman Mr. Yannis Sirros. “We implore President Putin to withdraw his weapons immediately and work toward restoring a path of dialogue and negotiations to save the people of Ukraine from the scourge of war”, continued Mr. Sirros.

In recent years, Ukraine has made major strides toward becoming a digital nation, with the ambitious goal of transforming Ukraine into a large European IT hub. Even though Ukraine has been entangled in a perpetual war with Russia since 2014, the Ukrainian IT industry has experienced a rapid growth of 36% and the sector has seen a significant influx of new talent. Information technology products and services is now one of the key export industries of Ukraine and, over the past three years, the industry has more than doubled its exports and has boosted its workforce by more than 50%. Many apps, programs and services are produced by Ukrainian companies, and citizens around the world rely on Ukrainian talent and expertise every day. Ukraine’s tech sector grew 20 percent in 2020 and is powered by a tradition of technical education and a recent boom in outsourcing from more expensive countries.

“Having already had reliable cooperation with WITSA beforehand, we are delighted to partner again, this time to provide support to Ukraine in this difficult hour. Currently being the only operating export industry, Ukrainian Tech has been demonstrating its resilience and still keeping its potential to grow. The idea is to let public figures and entrepreneurs express their support for Ukrainians via video recorded at the WePlay Arena L. A., which is uniquely decorated as a platform for the #StandwithUkraine initiative. The Ambassador and Consul General of Belgium Gunther Sleeuwagen, IT entrepreneurs Andrei Komarovsky and Ivan Agapchev, the Film Director, Screenwriter, and Producer Roland Emmerich have joined the project already. The IT Ukraine Association calls for entrepreneurs, who would like to feature in the next videos – live from the arena in Los Angeles (USA) or online, broadcasting the video on the screens.

 Fairfax, VA:  The World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA), the leading recognized international voice of the global digital technology industry, today announced that it has rebranded the organization to fully reflect the current state of digital transformation.

The new name of WITSA, “The World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance”, was adopted to ensure that WITSA will continue to be recognized as a relevant, evolving organization that represents the interests of the global digital technology industry, whose members from over 80 countries and economies represent more than 90 percent of the world ICT market.

WITSA Signs Global Industry Letter on Draft Data Transfer Assessment Measures from Cyberspace Administration of China

WITSA today signed a Global Industry Letter regarding the draft Security Assessment Measures for Cross-border Data Transfers recently issued by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC).  

The attached letter underscores the benefits of cross-border data transfers to China’s economy and governmental policy objectives. The letter also makes several procedural and substantive recommendations to the CAC.

The ability to transfer data securely across transnational digital networks is of central importance to the national policy objectives of many countries, including China. Data transfers support COVID-19 recovery, digital connectivity, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, anti-money laundering, and other activities relating to the protection of health, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance.

To avoid prejudicing these priorities, WITSA and our partners respectfully submit that the draft Data Transfer Assessment Measures should: (1) not impose greater restrictions on data transfers than necessary; (2) afford equal treatment to Chinese and foreign enterprises, services, and technologies; and (3) be administered in a uniform, impartial, and reasonable manner with a view to ensuring non-discriminatory and streamlined approvals.

WITSA has today joined, through our Digital Trade Network (DTN), a global coalition of industry associations in urging members of the World Trade Organization to keep the Internet free of tariffs ahead of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12).

Supported by 73 industry associations active across six continents, the Global Industry Statement on the WTO Moratorium on Customs Duties on Electronic Transmissions urges WTO Members to renew the Moratorium until the 13th Ministerial Conference.

WITSA Eminent Persons Award

The Honorable Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh

In 2010, WITSA decided to broaden its awards to include individuals who have made and are continuing to make a significant contribution to mankind. These contributions are not necessarily ICT related.

The first winner of the award was President Nelson Mandela of South Africa.  Additional winners include Co-Fathers of the Internet Drs. Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn, the Fathers of WI-FI Drs. John O’Sullivan and Terence Percival, Dr. Miguel Ângelo Laporta Nicolelis, best known for his pioneering work surrounding brain-machine interface technology, Mike Lazaratis, Founder of the Smart Phone, as well as other luminaries such as Dr Bill Magee the founder of Operation Smile, and Mr. Karen Vardanyan for his pioneering work in establishing the IC industry in Armenia.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the longest serving prime minister in Bangladesh’s history. Sheikh Hasina is a staunch crusader against fundamentalism, militancy and terrorism who has been a consistent force ensuring people’s right to food, to vote and protecting other fundamental rights. Despite a life filled with hardships, under her leadership, people of Bangladesh achieved democracy and freedom of speech. Bangladesh earned the dignity of becoming a lower middle-income country under her rule, having earlier been designated as a Least Developed Country (LDC). The country has achieved tremendous success on socio-economic fronts during her tenure. She has been bestowed many honorary degrees from esteemed universities around the world and was honored with numerous awards for her outstanding contributions to social work, peace and stability from notable institutions such as The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promotion of girls’ and women’s education. She was conferred on the United Nation’s highest environmental accolade ‘Champion of the Earth Award 2015’ in policy leadership category for her forefront role at home and abroad to face the adverse impacts of climate change. The International Telecommunication Union gave her the ‘ICTs in Sustainable Development Award 2015’ for her outstanding contributions in spreading information technology in the country.

In 2018 there were over 450,0000 custodial accounts in Argentina. This reflects that only 1% of the population had access to invest in the financial system, which was far below average in comparison to other countries of the region. The Chief goal of the Ministry of Digital Governance is to improve and ease the everyday quality of life and productivity of citizens and businesses measurably, through the simplification and digitization of the state and to transform Greece into “digital by default” by 2023.

SMART CITIES AWARD (PUBLIC SECTOR)

Emergency Dada Platform, all-hazard preparedness, and response for a digital government (Taiwan)

Has won multiple awards, demonstrated high impact, scalable, using innovative technologies, wide range of digital applications that benefit Taipei population on multiple levels.

RENTWISE SDN BHD (Malaysia)

A Global impact, scalable, and proven solution, Rentwise began operations in 2001 and from inception have been championing the need for a circular IT business model. The company acquires computers from the market when organizations retire these computers. Through a remanufacturing process, these computers are then restored to a ‘as-new condition’ and put back (repurposed) into the market either through a lease to use model or a sale, both of which the user is subsequently encouraged to return or sell back the computer to Rentwise at the end of use.

For the past few years, the company has been processing an average of 20,000 computers – a combination of laptops and desktops purchased back from the private and public sector annually. This reduces the country’s annual IT carbon footprint by 9,500 tons which is equivalent to 105 metric tons of e-waste.

Rentwisers are also on a social empowerment mission to inculcate within society the importance of repurposing than mere recycling. Taipei City Government Covid19 Dashboard and Data Analysis (Taiwan)

The COVID dashboard provides the city government’s decision-making team with key data including trends of the pandemic across the world, in Taiwan, and Taipei. In addition to statistical data, TUIC have more detailed COVID-19 data for Taipei City including Hot spots of confirmed cases, PCR positive rate, home isolation, total of rapid screening positive rates, real-time data on the flow of people entering the public spaces, and the number of people in epidemic prevention hotels.

In addition to using dashboards for monitoring data, TUIC has also conducted in-depth analysis and research. It uses epidemic investigation data to analyze infection associations, grasp the connections between confirmed cases and close contacts, expand the scope of the contact list, and clarify the infection chain of those diagnosed with the virus. It also uses the data of the confirmed cases to calculate the Rt value (Effective Reproductive Number) and the map of the confirmed growth rate of each area in Taipei City, assisting decision-making teams to quickly assess the weekly development of the pandemic in Taipei City.

This Project is well established (since 2015) and have proven successes. Half the Taiwanese population use the service and has resulted in a more active population. The Project is a partnership between Taiwan Sports Administration, the governing authority of sports activity in Taiwan, and Acer e-Enabling Service Business Inc. (AEB), an IT service provider for organizations looking for solutions of digital transformation. The Project set a goal at the inception to “instill health lifestyle to general public to meet the challenges brought upon by ageing society” through the nationwide promotion of sports/health activity and the establishment of well-architect information infrastructure.

It is a cloud-based infrastructure where people everywhere in the country can easily access sports information such as the nearest sports facility and services provided by the facility. It provides “data” to people for them to understand their status of physical fitness, creates an ecosystem where those in needs of professional sports advice can find coaches with authenticated certifications, and those in pursuit of a professional coaching career can be properly trained and certified.

The Taiwan i-Sports Information Platform was built and started to operate from 2015 until today, and in the process has concluded 5 sub-projects and implemented 15 systems. The Project brings enormous benefits to not only the local sports industry but also the overall society. 50% of Taiwanese have visited the platform for various purposes, accounted for around 12.3 million persons and 600% growth since the Project was initiated in 2015. More than 2600 sports events are published per year. Sports event participation rate has increased to around 85%, and the participation rate of events for the elderly also increased 51% in 2021 as compared to 2015

A proven project that reduces crime using digitized automation processes using deploying advanced data analytics and graphing technology and connectivity analysis of big data, Project POET is a collaboration between Singapore Police Force (Public Sector Category) and three private sector banks, namely Development Bank of Singapore (DBS), Oversea-Chinese Bank of Singapore (OCBC) and United Overseas Bank (UOB). POET leverages technology and process automation to facilitate the way data is retrieved and provided. These partner banks have optimized the process so as to speed up turnaround time.

Banking information that used to take between ten days to ninety days is now made available to investigators within one working day. This prompt exchange of banking information has improved the agility of law enforcement. Investigators are able to react faster to prevent the perpetuation of crime, improve crime detection and enhance solvability. With the improved speed of detection, potential victims are prevented from falling prey early and potential money are saved. POET has also significantly transformed the way data is managed to strengthen the surveillance and sense-making capabilities of the financial industry.

Nationwide public platform for learning resources, utilizing cloud and advanced technology and used hundreds of schools and millions of students and teachers. The “Taipei CooC-Cloud” platform for learning resources, since its establishment in 2016, has launched 11,248 online learning videos and 21 kinds of electronic databases, in an effort to provide parents, teachers and students with personalized and high-quality cloud learning services. Taipei CooC-Cloud has signed memorandums of understanding with 15 counties and cities across Taiwan to share the resources on the platform. It won the IDC SCAPA Award in the education category in 2019 and 2020 consecutively, receiving wide international recognition.

In 2021, in cooperation with the Department of Education and the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Taipei CooC-Cloud promoted CooC Cloud to 1,054 Chinese day schools abroad.  In 2021, an upgraded version of Taipei CooC-Cloud was launched, and a CooC APP was developed as a parent-teacher-student platform, effectively closing parent-teacher distance, and reducing the workload of school administrative staff. It utilizes electronic contact books, online survey forms, campus electronic 3 payments, activity registration, score query and more. During the class suspension period from May 19, 2021 to July 1, 2021 in response to the Covid-19 epidemic, the number of CooC-Cloud users increased by more than 25.02 million, overfilling 70 million visits. To be specific, the number of hits of online courses exceeded 330 million. A total of 315 schools across the country launched a total of 26,148 courses.

It is a high demand installation, since it helps airport’s operators to minimize the risk of bird collision with the airplanes during landing and take-off. The system is built around a unique Machine Learning algorithm, developed in-house, capable of detecting birds, flocks of birds, drones and other objects of interest within the critical areas of the airports. The nominated solution is based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms. Nvisionist has thorough knowledge of the Renewable Energy market and works closely with energy providers, environmental teams and lately with airport operators. Initially they developed a bird monitoring system for wind turbines and since then the solution has been modified and enhanced accordingly to cover the needs of airports

They realized that there was a need for a state-of-the-art system for bird deterrence that meet the criteria set by the responsible authorities, since the existing solutions were outdated and unable to meet the high standards for bird monitoring and deterrence suitable for airports. The innovative Monitoring System for airports “Nvbird airport” uses RGB cameras in combination with advanced yet inexpensive surface radar, to monitor the risk zones of the airport under any circumstances. It monitors the entire length of the runway and cover both the approach and take-off areas up to a height of 1,500 feet. The machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence ensure that birds in critical areas in the flight route of aircraft during take-off and landing are detected and when there is a high risk of collision it can also alarm the control tower operators to take appropriate measures.

Analysts estimate the cost of bird strikes between 1 and 2 billion US dollars per year. Currently the majority of airports rely on human patrols to observe and identify bird movements and scare them away by firing air cannons or play distress sounds from vehicles equipped with loudspeakers. Few airports deploy advanced radar systems which are extremely expensive and effective only on flocks of birds or very large birds.

WITSA Lauds PIKOM’s Perseverance through Global Pandemic to Host Grand Event on September 13-15, 2022

Fairfax, VA:  The World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) today announced that the 26th World Congress on IT (WCIT 2022) will take place in Penang, Malaysia on September 13-15, 2022, with the theme “Connecting and Transforming the World”, setting Penang as a gateway to ASEAN and a linkage to the world. Often referred to as the “Olympics of the information and communications technology industry”, the WCIT was first held in 1978. WITSA’s flagship event is unique in its global perspective on ICT issues and its ability to draw users, providers, media and academia from around the world. Global business, government and academic leaders discuss emerging markets, legal and policy issues, political and economic trends, emerging technologies, ICT user perspectives and business opportunities in the global marketplace. Among the featured speakers are the most distinguished and internationally recognized leaders from government and industry.

The National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM), in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), had originally won the bid to host WCIT in 2020. The event was ultimately postponed to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In its place, PIKOM hosted a spectacular three-day “Techfest Live featuring Road-to-WCIT 2022” virtual event on November 18-20, 2020. The event paved the way for the return of the WCIT to Malaysia in 2022 as the gateway to Southeast Asia with a market size of 650 million people. “WITSA is proud of PIKOM’s perseverance amidst the global crisis and for successfully planning the return of the World Congress on IT to Malaysia in 2022”, said WITSA Chairman Yannis Sirros. “With the return of the WCIT, PIKOM demonstrates how the world can recover from this crisis with digital technologies as a driver of prosperity, economic growth and innovation, introducing a new digital future, all over the world,” continued Mr. Sirros. “Among all the lessons derived from the COVID-19 pandemic, none is more important than stressing the importance of ICT development. Crises will come and go but falling behind in the Digital Age will cast nations into perpetual poverty and hardship. Catching up is quite possible if nations act NOW with a sense of Urgency. WCIT 2022 will put a spotlight on how countries, societies and businesses can succeed in a post-pandemic world by embracing digital transformation and by accelerating digital investments to match changing customer needs, improve business operation through use of data and AI, modernizing technology capabilities selectively to boost growth, and enhancing organizational agility to adapt quicker to market changes”.
